Welcome to the Kirby Road Site

Posted on June 15th by Bill Fant

Welcome to our latest Habitat build. This year we are partnering with Cincinnati Habitat to do an extreme makeover on a house in Northside. The house, located at 4222 Kirby Rd., was built in the late 1880's for one of 2 sisters.

1June 21
This week required a lot of dedicated workers who were not afraid to get a "little dirty". We removed plaster and lath from all three floors of the house. And, since we had a dumpster this weekend, we removed all debris from the building and site.

2June 28
What a Crew! The Chimney was removed today to the level of the basement ceiling. The basement ceiling has been removed. We are ready to start re-framing the roof!

2July 5
We are taking the holiday weekend off.

3July 12
We completed the chimney removal and began begin putting down sublfooring on both floors. Lots of small cleanup tasks, including vacuuming. The goal at the end of the day was to be able to pressure wash the interior of the basement. We ran out of time to finish the cleanup.

4July 19
Finished flooring and removed remaining debris. Began removing existing roof. Located broken water line. Dug post holes for front porch.

5July 26
What an incredible group of people. We removed the entire existing roof, began reframing the roof and 2nd floor outside walls. We placed blocking in 1st floor walls. The most incredible part was we also hauled all of the debris away and we were able to clean up the entire back yard.

6August 2
Jim Craig led small work group and they finished installing the rafters and finished installing the sheeting over the old building. You all are awesome! Thanks for your generosity and dedication to this family and to this project.

7August 9
We continued to make progress in sealing up the outside of the house to protect our tools and supplies and to allow for the mechanicals to be installed. a. We pulled the shingles off of the front section of the roof, and began the process of replacing the bad rafters. Unfortunately, I miscounted and we were one rafter short of the number needed to re-sheet the roof. We will have to wait until next Saturday to complete the front roof. b. We began reframing the main staircase to the second floor. To re-frame the opening, we began to build some walls below the floor joists to hold them up while we re-work the opening and double up the joists. BUT, the first step was to take the existing steps out first before we couold do anything, as they were in the way. c. We also began framing first floor walls and we moved the lockable door to the front of the house. d. Finally, we picked up our new job box and with the help of everyone, we were able to move it into the house. Now, all of our tools are safely secured.

8August 16
We had a light turnout this weekend so things went a little slower than expected. But everyone had fun. And it was great to hear abut New Orleans from Dave, Suzie, Erin, and Phillip. 1. We made major progress in re-framing all of the windows and doors to the proper sizes. 2. We created covers for windows and doors to keep people and animals out until windows arrive. 3. We hauled away the remaining roof debris in trucks. The last, I promise for a while. 4. We built the new stair landing and we temporarily installed the old stairs. 5. We still need to to re-frame the opening for the proper head room over the new staircase.

9August 23
Here is what we completed this weekend. 1. We continued to seal up the outside of the house to protect our tools and supplies and to allow for the mechanicals to be installed. a. We completed the re-framing of all windows and doors to the proper sizes. b. We covered part of the front and right side of the house with plywood and Tyvek wrap. c. We finished re-framing the roof and replaced the sheeting and tar paper on the front roof. 2. We installed the lower stairs and re-framed the opening for the new stairs and we built some walls below the floor joists to hold them. 3. We framed the new front porch and it is ready for decking.

Holiday Weekend - Taking the weekend off

10September 6
A big thank you to the Xavier students who worked the morning shift! Their attendance boosted the amount of work that we could accomplish. During the week, a small crew finished the stair installation. Our primary goal this weekend was to re-sheet the front and the right side of the house. To access the front, we needed to install the decking on the front porch and then to erect scaffolding on the porch. We completed the porch decking and erected the scaffolding, but did not finish the front of the house. This is a priority for next weekend. We were able to finish the window and door framing and we removed the remaining old lap siding from the right side of the house. This was replaced with new sheeting. We completed the second floor flooring and began to build the walls on the second floor. Next weekend, we will complete the interior wall framing. We also installed a temporary toilet in the basement and placed the new shower enclosures in the house. After all of this, we cleaned up the entire house. Just a little scrap left int he second floor, but most of this will be used to complete the interior walls and ceilings.

11September 13
First of All, thank you Xavier students. Your assistance is welcome every Saturday. This weekend, we completed the removal of old lap siding on the front of the house and finished the installation of new sheeting on the front and right sides of the house. We were unable to pour the footer for the new addition this weekend. We also built some of the interior walls.

12September 20
We had a dedicated and hard working group of people today, including 16 students from Xavier. We poured 3 1/2 yards of concrete ( about 40 wheelbarrows full ) for the new addition. The concrete had to be moved up the neighbors driveway ( a hill ) to the rear of the house. Then it had to be taken down a ramp and poured into the trench. No one got hurt and no one fell into the concrete. We had enough left over to fill in the holes in the basement floor where the chimney and furnace had been located. The neighbors roof was finished before we arrived, so we did not complete this task. We finished off the gutter board and sheeting on the right side of the house and installed the new drip edge and new tar paper. We also built most of the remaining walls on the second floor. Thanks everyone!

13September 27
We had a slow start as the delivery of our materials did not occur until it was too late to use them. However, with the help of several volunteers with trucks, we obtained the mortar we needed and were able to begin laying block around 11 AM. We built the north and south walls and most of the east wall. Rebar rods and anchor bolts were set to allow us to begin framing the new floor next weekend. We will need to finish a few more block next weekend. We installed Tyvek wrap on the entire right side of the house and finished the gutter board, drip edge and tar paper on the front of the house. We also finished framing most of the interior walls. A group also cleaned up the outside of the house.

14October 4
We had another materials delivery problem so we were delayed in starting this morning. Habitat Bob drove to the rescue and delivered our lumber and mortar by mid-morning. We were successful in setting the floor joists for the rear addition. We still have block to work on. so our framing of the new addition may be delayed by 1 week. We finished installing ceiling joists on the second floor and we completed the interior wall framing. We also applied furring strips to the outside left side of the house in preparation for new siding.

15October 11
Thanks to some elves who laid the rear floor this past week and finished laying the block on the rear foundation, we were able to complete the framing of the first floor walls on the rear addition. We also installed all of the windows and rebuilt the rear wall of the old house on the first floor. The second floor is clear of all debris and we are ready to frame the remainder of the new addition. Thanks, Everyone.... And Bob and Joe built a retaining wall in front of the house that is incredible.

16October 18
We continue to make progress on completing the framing. Matching up the new addition with the old house took more time than we estimated, so we will now complete framing on October 25th and begin roofing and siding. The house is ready for electrical, plumbing and HVAC installation. We continue to clean up the site and have the house free of all left over materials.

17October 25
What an incredible team of people. The entire roof is done. The entire house is sheeted and wrapped in Tyvek. The HVAC was completely installed today by Apollo. The basement stairs are in the basement ready to be installed. The house is clear of all debris. All of the windows are installed. Jessie made us all coffee....And lunch was absolutely wonderful. Next weekend.....We side the house.

18November 1
We installed siding on both sides and the back of the house to the level of the second floor. We installed the basement stairs and electrical on the second floor. We also installed the side entry door. Next weekend, we finish the siding.

Rainy and Cold today! Josh, Matt, Joseph and Jim setup the scaffolding on Friday afternoon. We made a valiant effort at finishing the siding, but the weather just would not cooperate. We have a little more to do ( Monday morning at 8:30 ) and the left side of the house is done. Breaking News: They completed the left side of the house and they took down the scaffolding. We should be ready for electrical and framing inspections this week. The 22nd, we should be ready to do insulation.

We have an absolutely incredible group of volunteers. We are in the second day of a three day dry wall blitz. We expect to completely finish the house on Sunday. Many are still feeling the pain of the loss of one of our church family members at Crossroads. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends and all the members of the church who have been affected.
