Greetings alumni and friends of the Winkle College of Pharmacy,
Welcome to the latest issue of Cincinnati Pharmacy, the newsletter of the James L. Winkle College of Pharmacy.
As we start the 2018-19 academic year and our new and returning students begin classes, it is a time of excitement for several reasons:
First, we are welcoming our largest group of incoming students—PharmD, MS, and PhD—in the 168-year history of the college. In addition, the first eight students in our new BS/MS dual-degree, co-op program in cosmetic science, a partnership with the McMicken College of Arts & Sciences, begin their first semester. This new program builds upon our strength in the fields of skin science and cosmetic science.
Second, the research productivity of our college has increased in each of the last five years. In 2013, our faculty held $4.3 million in total funding. That figure now stands at $9.7 million. Since the start of 2018, several of our faculty have received notice of new research grants and we are excited about their contributions to science in experimental therapeutics, biomembrane science and health outcomes. As a college, we have built up a critical mass of research faculty in the areas of cancer and neuroscience. Just down the street, on the corner of Eden Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, the new UC Gardner Neuroscience Institute is quickly taking shape as a signature building on UC’s medical campus.
Lastly, on Oct. 5, we will recognize three individuals who have been selected as our 2018 Distinguished Alumni, and our PharmD Class of 2022 will receive their white coats in our annual White Coat Ceremony. Thank you to those of you who sponsored a white coat for a member of our new PharmD Class.
If you have not been to the college in the past year, I invite you to stop by this fall for a visit. The $34 million renovation to Kowalewski Hall was completed a year ago and the building is a home we can all be proud of for our college. There are opportunities to name a room in the new building—please reach out to me if that is of interest to you.
