Pharmacy College Partners With University in Chile

Pharmacy College Partners With University in Chile

Published:

The first cohort of pharmacy students will depart for Chile this summer as part of a new international partnership between the James L. Winkle College of Pharmacy and theUniversity of Concepción (UdeC).

"This opportunity exposes students to different cultures and health care systems and it’s a driving force toward cultural competence in global pharmacy practice,” says Ana Hincapie, PhD, an assistant professor at Winkle College of Pharmacy, who co-directs the program.

Hincapie, a native of Colombia who also sits on the UC International advisory committee for strategic partnerships, initiated the partnership with her Chilean colleague, Lorenzo Villa, PhD.

The partnership will provide shadowing opportunities for pharmacy students in settings that are representative of contemporary pharmacy practice in Chile. There are opportunities for fourth-year students to experience an advanced experiential rotation and an elective course available to first through third year students. All clinical training will be conducted under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist, pharmacy intern or other licensed health care practitioner.

Six students have already signed up for the 2017 summer and fall program and in March a UdeC faculty member will come to UC to observe the college’s pharmacy skills lab.

Hincapie joined the college in April 2015 as an assistant professor of health outcomes and the first female Latina faculty member.
