Yan Named Associate Dean of Research and Innovation at Pharmacy College

CINCINNATI—Bingfang Yan, PhD, has been named associate dean of research and innovation at the University of Cincinnati James L. Winkle College of Pharmacy. In this newly created position, Yan will direct the graduate program, provide leadership on new initiatives, help to increase research productivity and mentor junior faculty in their research.

He also holds the title of professor in the division of pharmaceutical sciences.

"It is critical for us to have a senior leader and mentor at the college to help us to continue to improve our research granting success, which has more than doubled since 2014,” says Dean Neil MacKinnon, PhD, noting that college of pharmacy rankings are strongly correlated to research funding. "We are excited to have Dr. Yan on board at the college.”

Yan joins the Winkle College of Pharmacy from the University of Rhode Island. His foundation is in veterinary medicine, but he has advanced training in microbiology and immunology, pharmacology/toxicology and tumor biology.

Yan’s laboratory, which has repeatedly been funded by the NIH, was among the first to clone and characterize the gene encoding the pregnane X receptor (PXR), and the gene encoding differentiated embryo-chondrocyte-expresse gene 1 (DEC1).

PXR is a master regulator for drug-metabolizing enzymes and transporters, whereas DEC1 is a circadian regulator with oncogenic involvement.

Yan frequently serves on scientific review panels at both the NIH and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and is currently a standing member of NIH Study Section INMP.
