Watch for an in-depth program overview from faculty, an enrollment services advisor, and current students. The Hygienic Manufacturing of Cosmetic Products Graduate Certificate Program Created with the Personal Care Products Council (PCPC)
Recently, PCPC, an umbrella organization of major cosmetic product manufacturers such as Proctor and Gamble, Johnson & Johnson, Loreal, Colgate, and Unilever, identified hygienic manufacturing of cosmetic products as a major challenge in the industry because of current trends in switching to more natural and less efficacious preservative systems. The result is an increased incidence of microbiological contamination of plant-produced products that have been discarded followed by decontamination of the plant equipment. The lack of trained professionals in cosmetic formulations, hygiene, and plant engineering has been identified by PCPC as a major issue in controlling this problem.
The initiative for the Hygienic Manufacturing of Cosmetic Products Graduate Certificate came from PCPC when they approached UC to launch a training program in hygienic manufacturing of cosmetic products.
UC’s Online Cosmetic Science program has been growing at a rapid rate.
The UC online cosmetic science program has been growing at a rapid rate over the past few years. One area that is not covered under our current programs (MS degree in cosmetic science (30 credits), a Graduate Certificate in Cosmetic Science) is on manufacturing aspects of cosmetic products. The Hygienic Manufacturing of Cosmetic Products Graduate Certificate will fill that gap and will help address an unmet need in cosmetic science education.
Thus, the GC program in hygienic manufacturing of cosmetic products is complementary to the existing programs. Key manufacturing elements, especially the hygienic aspects, are covered with two new Hygienic Manufacturing courses.
Notably, those who would like to go beyond the GC and complete the MS can formally apply and transfer their GC credits toward the MS.
Why specialize in Hygienic Manufacturing?
The purpose of the program is to provide training in cosmetic formulation science including preservation science along with relevant plant engineering and hygienic manufacturing. Thus, plant engineers with cosmetic science backgrounds and cosmetic formulation chemists with manufacturing backgrounds can begin to address potential microbial contamination issues and ensure the production of hygienic products.
The significance of this program is that it will produce trained professionals in both cosmetic science and hygienic manufacturing.
